In the ever-evolving realm of sports technology, Extreme Networks emerged as a true champion, notably in its partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB). As we reflect on the highs and home runs of 2023, Extreme Networks takes the spotlight for its integral role in transforming MLB’s connectivity landscape.

The State of MLB Connectivity: A Recap of 2023

At the intersection of sports and technology, the demand for robust connectivity has never been more critical. Extreme Networks, serving as the Official Wi-Fi solutions provider for MLB since 2021, has been at the forefront of this transformation. In a recent review by Wes Durow, Extreme’s Chief Marketing Officer, highlights from the collaboration with MLB in 2023 came to the forefront.

The All-Star Weekend Triumph

One resounding victory for Extreme Networks was during the All-Star weekend in July. The company seamlessly connected an impressive 155,000 devices, facilitating the transfer of a staggering 47.3 terabytes of data over the course of three days. This feat underscored Extreme’s prowess in handling massive data loads, ensuring that fans could engage in real-time activities such as tweeting, Instagramming, and other data-intensive tasks without a hitch.

“We saw big numbers at the All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby. We can track what people are using app-wise. We’ve got some markets that are Instagram and Twitter and others that are Facebook and Snapchat. We get great insights from that,” noted Wes Durow.

San Francisco Giants’ Leap to Wi-Fi 6E

Bill Schlough, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the San Francisco Giants, joined the discussion to share insights into the Giants’ journey with Extreme Networks. Having been early adopters of Wi-Fi, the Giants made a significant leap in 2023 by upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6E network, marking a pioneering move in professional sports. The successful integration of 879 new access points at their park demonstrated Extreme’s commitment to staying on the cutting edge of technology.

Beyond Connectivity: A Network at the Heart of the Ballpark

For the San Francisco Giants, the network powered by Extreme is not just about providing connectivity to fans; it’s an intricate web that supports various aspects of the ballpark’s operations. From concession stands and security to video distribution, broadcasters, roving cameras, iPads for coaches, and much more, the network is a central nervous system ensuring the smooth operation of every facet of the game.

Bill Schlough emphasized that the network’s significance goes beyond mere connectivity; it’s about capability and insights. The ability to understand how people utilize the network is crucial. Schlough reminisced about the journey since 1999, where tracking the speed of a pitch was done with a radar gun, and marveled at the advancements that now include tracking spin rate, exit velocity, and even player movements on the field.

The Future Game Plan: 5G and AI

Looking forward, Schlough sees enormous potential for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) across all business areas. The Giants’ commitment to tracking every possible aspect of the game aligns seamlessly with the potential of AI and ML. As 5G connectivity continues to evolve, it is poised to be a key enabler for the next phase of advancements. While Schlough believes that 5G will eventually surpass Wi-Fi, the team is presently covering all bases to ensure comprehensive connectivity for fans.

Extreme Networks‘ Connectivity Grand Slam

As we enter 2024, it’s evident that Extreme Networks has played a pivotal role in the connectivity evolution within MLB. The collaboration between Extreme Networks and the San Francisco Giants serves as a testament to the company’s dedication to innovation and customer satisfaction.

In the grand game of connectivity, Extreme Networks has not only kept pace with the demands of the modern sports landscape but has consistently exceeded expectations.
