The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated Nigeria’s growth in the technology sector, according to Niyi Gbodimowo, a member of the Computer Professionals of Nigeria. He stated that the pandemic has opened doors to technological innovations, particularly for the youth. The contribution of the sector will continue to rise in the years to come, he added, due to Nigeria’s demographics, which are heavily skewed towards the youth. Furthermore, Nigeria’s traditional industries are also looking into how to leverage the advantages of information and communications technology (ICT).

According to Gbodimowo, Nigeria is the hub of innovation in the technology sector, with companies growing fast and becoming multi-million and multi-billion dollar entities. He added that compensation, general development of technology, capacity, and money in the sector are generally higher than in other sectors, attracting more hands and investment into the industry.

Gbodimowo emphasized that the incoming administration of President-elect Bola Tinubu should consolidate on the progress made in the past eight years by the current administration, particularly in the ICT sector, which has contributed more than 18% to Nigeria’s economy. The Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy and agencies like NITDA have also contributed to this growth.

Gbodimowo recommended creating a National Centre for AI and Robotics within the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to focus on AI research and innovation. He also encouraged the incoming administration to be aware of the support available in Nigeria for the technology sector, including the STEM core from secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

In terms of the impact of 5G technology on Nigeria, Gbodimowo stated that the next few years will bring significant changes that will make the world almost unrecognizable, particularly in Artificial Intelligence. He added that Nigeria has unique advantages that can make it a leader in the sector in Africa with the right support.

Overall, the ICT sector in Nigeria has continued to grow rapidly, and it is expected to continue to do so. With the right support and investment, Nigeria could be the technology hub of Africa, creating jobs and driving economic growth.
