Nvidia GTC 2024 Recap: Beyond Blackwell, The Unmissable Highlights

The NVIDIA GTC 2024 conference, renowned for its groundbreaking announcements, recently concluded, with much more than the highly anticipated Blackwell architecture and the launch of colossal new DGX systems. Amidst the spotlight, several other significant unveilings took place, reshaping the landscape of AI and high-speed networking.

High-Speed Networking Platforms:

While NVIDIA‘s prowess in GPUs is well-known, its foray into networking with Mellanox has been gaining momentum. The company introduced two groundbreaking high-speed network platforms designed for AI systems: the Quantum-X800 InfiniBand and the Spectrum-X800 Ethernet. These platforms offer unprecedented throughput speeds of up to 800 GB/s, setting a new benchmark in networking capabilities.

The Quantum-X800 InfiniBand comprises the Quantum 3400 switch and ConnectX-8 SuperNIC, boasting five times the bandwidth capacity and nine times the in-network computing compared to previous generations. On the other hand, the Spectrum-X800 Ethernet, featuring the Spectrum SN5600 800Gbps switch and Nvidia BlueField-3 SuperNIC, targets multi-tenant generative AI clouds and large enterprises.

Inferencing Microservices:

In a move defying traditional notions, Nvidia introduced microservices tailored for inferencing on large language models (LLMs). Named Nvidia Inference Microservices (NIM), this software, part of Nvidia’s Enterprise AI software package, offers optimized inference engines, industry-standard APIs, and support for AI models bundled into containers for easy deployment. NIM collaborates with major software vendors and data platform providers, enabling seamless inference processing on popular AI models.

Storage Validation Program:

Recognizing the pivotal role of storage in AI processing, Nvidia initiated the Nvidia OVX storage partner validation program. Aimed at certifying storage solutions for AI and graphics-intensive workloads, OVX provides standardized validation processes for partners. Leading companies like DDN, Dell PowerScale, NetApp, Pure Storage, and WEKA are among the first batch of participants seeking OVX storage validation.

OEMs Embrace Blackwell:

All major OEMs seized the opportunity presented by Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture. Dell Technologies, Lenovo, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Supermicro announced new offerings powered by Blackwell. These include flagship servers, AI systems, and turnkey solutions, emphasizing the industry’s readiness to embrace next-gen AI capabilities.

NVIDIA/AWS Supercomputer Upgrade:

In collaboration with Amazon, NVIDIA is set to upgrade Project Ceiba, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, with Blackwell processors. Initially featuring over 16,000 H100 Hopper AI processors, Project Ceiba’s upgrade with 10,386 Blackwell B200 superchips is projected to deliver up to six times faster performance than originally planned, potentially achieving an astonishing 414 exaFLOPS.

Amidst the excitement surrounding Blackwell, Nvidia’s GTC 2024 showcased a myriad of innovations beyond the expected, reaffirming Nvidia’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI and high-performance computing.
